Strong Kids from Strong Parents / Jóvenes Fuertes de Padres Fuertes
Strong Kids from Strong Parents is a culturally-adapted social-emotional learning curricula designed for the purpose of teaching social and emotional skills, promoting resilience, strengthening assets, instilling cultural pride and increasing coping skills of Latino children and early adolescents considered at-risk for mental health problems and drop-out rates so they will be successful in schools and their lives.
The program is available in Spanish, English or Bilingual with youth served in age appropriate groups while parents are taught the lessons separately and receive additional parenting education on family and relationships with support in accessing community-based behavioral health and social services. Benefits Participants benefit by letting go of their ties to past hurts and unhealthy behaviors. In many cases this is the first step in a process of change that starts by realizing that they need to change and contemplating the effect that positive change can have on their lives. After the one-day retreat and follow up sessions, participants end up with a life project and a willingness to take action and maintain the changes in behavior. When the process affirms the religious practices of the participant, there usually is a more profound and permanent effect. There are many studies showing that religion has a stabilizing effect and a positive mental health effect on participants. Process The program includes 12 lessons facilitated by culturally competent and certified interventionists under the supervision of a mental health professional. Students find these lessons to be engaging and fun, and they benefit from the integrated behavioral, affective, and cognitive approach that is taken to introduce and master key concepts.
